Hi
I’ve had Fibromyalgia for 18 yrs and am now totally disabled with the pain. I’m on 24mg Hydromorph Contin 2x/day but I’m still in pain. I can barely function, and i get hurt very easily, no matter what I try to do. Does anyone out there take this medication, and if so, what else do you take? ie. muscle relaxants? sleep meds?
Thanks
Caroline
Hydromorph Contin is slow-acting morphine. I’m also on fast-acting morphine called Dilaudid, but I must be on the wrong dose as this stuff barely helps at all. My doctor has tried me on all kinds of stuff, but, as with many FMS patients, I have multiple chemical sensitivities, so he’s basically thrown up his hands. Some meds make my hands and stomach swell up, others give me severe stomach cramping, and others "blow my head off" (not a true medical term ![]()

2Consistent pain relief can be difficult to find with regard to fibromyalgia. I take magnesium supplements daily as they tend to reduce the occurence of severe muscle cramping, sudden pain, and the feelings of feverishness. For pain relief, I exercise when I can, try very hard to get enough rest, eat properly, and drink plenty of water. I have found that pharmaceutical grade fish oil capsules provide me with plenty of omega-3’s and that helps with both my physical discomfort, but also with feelings of depression that tend to lurk around fibromyalgia. Finally, when I need to take something directly for pain, I try to stick to aleve as many of the pain medications prescribed by doctors are quite addictive. If the pain ever gets bad enough, I’ll follow my doctor’s advice and try a prescription…until then, I’m sticking with over the counter. I also find that long hot soaks are sometimes helpful, while at other times it seems cold packs work better. For sleep meds, I use natural products like Calms Forte, a homeopathic treatment, or valerian, an herb with a long history of use to enhance sleep.

4You need professional advise about your pain control, speak to your Doctor and ask him or her to refer you to a pain management clinic they can help you.

5The first principle is the identification and treatment of maintaining factors ( eg. dysfunctional beliefs & behaviuors, mood & sleep disorders )
* Communication…….Explanation of ill-health , inc diagnosis & causes. Education about management ( inc self-help leaflets.
*Stopping drugs (eg. caffeine , causing insomnia , analgesics causing dependence)
* Rehabilative therepies
Cognitive behaviour therapy( to challenge unhelpful beliefs
and change coping strategies )
Supevised and graded exercise therapy ( to reduce inactivity and improve fitness )
* Pharmacotherapies
Specific anti-depressant for mood disorders , analgesia and
sleep disturbance.
Symptomatic medicines ( eg. appropriate analgesia , taken onl
when necessary .
A Recent analysis suggestthat trycyclic anti-sepressants have greatest effect on sleep, fatigue & pain.

6My aunt had/has the same problem with meds. I also have fibromyalgia, but I take methadone and percoset, that works for me, but you are way beyond that, as was my aunt. Her doctor also was at the point where he threw up his hands, but they found a solution! She is now using Fentanyl (duragesic) patches! Much stronger than Dilaudid. She also takes like 30 percoset a week. (Probably more, it’s over 200 a month) It seems to be working for her. Also do they have medical marijuana where you are? You may want to give that a shot. I use that also. Whatever happens I wish you luck!!! This is such an awful thing to have to deal with on a daily basis………I wouldn’t wish it on anyone!!!

7I don’t know about the pills you are taking…but I would get a second opinion on a Dr. as they are always coming up with new diseases and conditions…my mother was recently diagnosed and her Dr tells her to keep a healthy diet and go to a chiropractor on a daily basis.

8You are way beyond where I am already. I’m staying as active as I can. I refuse to let this beat me.
I do yoga, well sort of…stretching before bed at night. I can never attempt it in the morning. Sleep is not on the list most of the time, the pain is too much, so I’ve gone to long soaks in vinegar and vanilla baths, that seems to draw the stiffness out. Pain management is on my agenda this year, I need to learn how to manage the pain without it managing me…there are a number of ways, my girlfriend uses acupuncture, another uses massage, and another uses chiropractic. I use all but the acupuncture and I only do a massage when I have a mineral bath that I can get into before and after the massage.
I’ve been dealing with this mess since I was 16 and I’m getting into my late 40’s now. My son was diagnosed last year at the age of 17 with this. He’s in for a long road, there are days he can’t function.
I take Formula 303 which is an all natural muscel relaxant for the days when its not too bad, and Aleve when it’s not bad and of course the almighty percocet…when it’s the worse, problem is that I try to hold off too long…
I try everything natural first and only use the rest when I have to.
To think they used to say my grandmother was crazy for having pain all the time, no one believed her…if it was this bad and she had no help I can see how she was crazy.
In our family there is about 1/4 of us that have this stuff.
I think sometimes its nice to have someone to vent with…let me know if you need that, I’m always ready to listen and try something new to relieve the pain!
From one fibro to another fibro….take it easy, it’s only a time frame.
