I have recently been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I also have Rheumatoid arthritis. I’m 32 and mother of 2. My Rheumatologist perscribed Lyrica but the insurance co. is refusing to cover it even at the Dr. written request! (Don’t get me started on this one!) Is there any medication that anyone has tried that they think works on the pain? I have Darvocet but rarely take it because I need to function, besides it really doesn’t help much. I take Tylenol Arthritis also. I get such terrible flareups that I can barely function. I lost my career (firefighter) because I didn’t feel I could function safely and not be a liability and then had to quit my job as a server because it was too much on my joints. I could really use some advice and hear personal experience with different meds/home remedies. Thanks!

1Call a pharmacist. They are so smart when it comes to medications. Maybe there’s a med that can be used instead of lyrica that your insurance does allow. Wish I could help you more!! The pharmacist will guide you. I promise!!

2I’ve read a lot that 5-HTP can really help. I think it’s just a dietary supplement, so no scripts needed.
It’s supposed to boost your serotonin and therefore reduce your symptoms. I’ve got an appointment on Monday to ask my doc about this.

3Your insurance should cover Neurontin or the generic equivalent. It is basically the same as Lyrica without the high co-pay for you.
Cymbalta has shown to be effective in some studies and in fact the company has just submitted to get FDA approval for this indication.
Older medications like Elavil may work as well.

4Welcome to the Club! I have Fibromyalgia too and it sure isn’t fun to have, that’s for sure. I have had it since I was 25 years old and now I’m 29 currently. I had to waste a considerable amount of money and time, trying different over the counter medicines and also dietary supplements which didn’t help much either.
The only thing I can recommend is taking either Tylenol Extra Strength, 500 MG or Advil every 4 hours. That’s where I am at right now, I lost hope with finding a drug for it besides this one I was taking but ran out of. The prescription was for a drug by the name of Tramadol and its just basically a prescription pain reliever. It did work pretty well but my Doctor was kind of hesitate to give it to me because he thought I might become addicted to it but I don’t think I ever did, as far as I know.
I hope you find something that works for you. I still am able to work part time at my job in a restaurant but I can’t do any physical lifting there, it starts hurting just like that if I do any at all. I had to tell my boss a couple of times when he wanted me to put the truck away, heavy boxes were too much for my arms and back, it was hurting badly within minutes.
Good luck to you!

5You are only 32, its too early for you to have all these problems, they usually come up after 45 or so thats after meno. May be you should join a gym class, cause weight lifting really helps to strengthen the joints and builds strong bones. You need to eat plenty of frest fruit and veggies and lots of water for the day to flush the system of toxins. Also buy a yoga disc and do yoga at home and lots of deep breathing and stretches. Dont depend on drugs and tablets they have a lot of side effects which will make you worse. Go the natural way and take care of your health. You are still young and you need to take care of your little one too. So all the best. Sometimes you may have pain due to poor circulation, take an asprin to relieve your pain and improve the circulation.

7Brown K needs to get an education about Fibromyalgia and Auto-immune Disorders. These aren’t conditions you acquire by being lazy and can be solved by going to the gym. Fibromyalgia and Auto-immune Disorders can strike anyone at any age. -I used to go to the gym and could bench 40kg (about 88 lbs) 3 sets with 15 reps per set before I got sick with Polymyositis (auto-immune disorder - immune system destroying the muscles) AND Fibromyalgia. -
With that out of the way, you can try Neurontin. The generic name is Gabapentin. Physican’s Desk Reference would say start at 300mg three times a day, but I have never gone over 100 mg per day (I take my Neurontin at night because it makes me sleepy). With good sleep (sleep has a lot to do with how fibromyalgia affects us), I’m pretty good for the following day unless something really strenuous or physically straining happens that day.
I also feel better since I’ve started using LifePak (Pharmanex). Try to look for this book called "Reversing Fibromyalgia" by Dr. Joe Elrod. Here’s the link: http://www.amazon.com/Reversing-Fibromyalgia-Overcome-Arthritis-Related-Diseases/dp/1580540058
He has treated and studied our disease for a long time. He found that we lack certain micronutrients. There are some that I could not get from the usual OTC multivitamin supplements or were hard to find in foods sold at the local grocer, but were in LifePak. (I did my research =))

9Fibromyalgia is what the doctor tells you when he has no clue as to what you have..
This is the best solution for human or pet..My vet who has pioneered noni for pets, says if he was dropped off somewhere and could only take one medicine it would be noni juice. Read the other article links that have to do with noni and fibro.. Be sure you buy 100 per cent pure noni, not the mlm grape juice stuff. Not the pure water you buy at wallmart of wallgreens. You can find many sources just google or go to ebay.
I don’t sell noni or have anything commercial to do with it. My golden retriever had an operation and Dr Tran gave him noni rather than pain killers after an ear operation. It has been proven to be 80% as effective as morphine sulfate. He calmed down immediately each time…
