I’m asking this question on behalf of a special friend of mine…
She’s looking for help falling asleep. Since she was child, she has not been able to fully sleep. She’s been on all the medications, tried all the herbal stuff and still cannot fall asleep. She has debilitating fibromyalgia and will spend hours in bed tossing and turning fully awake. Its like her mind is constantly stuck in fast forward and nothing seems to help. When she finally finally falls asleep, its not deep enough to reach stage 4. She once told me something about way too many alpha waves in her brain, not enough beta.
I’m looking for help / advice on where to go from here. She hates meds and has been through’em all- they don’t help. What else can she try? Does anyone know an emailable doctor who specializes in severe insomnia / sleep disorders? Thank you!

1well i studied this in psychology class for a while
in order to obtain a full night’s sleep here are a few things she can do:
-no naps longer than 15 min.
-a warm bath 10 min. before bedtime
-stay away from simple sugars (like candy + soda) and caffeine
-sleep in a dark and quiet environment
-meditation can help her relax
as for an "emailable" doctor….why doesn’t she just try a real one?
curious

2I would suggest that she get into some strenuous physical activity, a sports Competition of some kind, a exercise program that will tire her out.
If she wares herself out during the day, she’ll sleep at night.

3I’ve studied teh so called sleep hygeine method too-and tried it–it doe snot apply to people that have an actaul sleep disorder–it may help slightly–but still won’t give good quality sleep..
for me–doign the opposite helps—like sleeping iwth teh TV on….
for people to suggest things they learned in psychology class and just generic suggestions really isn’t hepful.

4I have had FMS for 18 years, though I have never in my 40 years been able to sleep well. I have had insomnia (lack of any sleep) many times. I have been on prescribed sleeping pills for 11 years now. I would never recommend sleeping pills to anyone, but it sounds like your friends case, she needs it. There are several brands she can try, the 1 I’ve been on for the longest & does the most good is Ambien. There’s different doses of Ambien that she can get & can get 2 different kinds, the regular & Ambien CR. The CR doesn’t work for me but does work for many others. There’s really no getting to sleep on your own. Trust me I know this so well, I’ve tried every homeopathic remedy, every meditation technique & other non-mainstream therapy like acupressure & EFT, every wives tale, every sleeping OTC aide known to man & Ambien is the only thing that helps me. Has she tried Ambien or Lunestra? (there’s a generic brand for Ambien now that is much less expensive). No one LIKES taking med’s but if her insomnia isn’t treated, she will only get sicker & sicker. She needs to sleep.
I hope your friend can get some help. Have her check out Dr. St. Amand’s protocol for treatment of FMS (Link below) it is a very successful treatment for FMS, though not a cure, it’s very helpful. You can also ask the staff on this site for help with sleeping.
Hope she gets better soon. It sounds like she’s got good support from you. She needs that too. Don’t give up on her, K!
