Posted by Fibromyalgia Support as Fibromyalgia-Diagnosis
I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis over a year ago and for insurance reason had to switch rheumatologists. I had my first visit prior to my records arriving. The new doctor said without having reviewed my past records and based on my symptoms that I have fibromyalgia. I’ve researched that disease and it seems as though I have both, which would account for a few inconsistancies. It has been shown through an MRI that I have inflammation in my hips , and by way of my other symptoms, I believe that my first diagnosis was correct. What I am wondering is how likely it is to have both? I know that it is not uncommon for people with anlylosing spondylitis to also have ulcerative colitis….

1You can easily have both-
but inflammtion is not Fibromyalgia
some doctors will slap the Fibromyalgia diagnosis on anyone because they don’t think it is a real disease and just give the label to anyone who has aches and pains
A Fibromyalgia diagnosis can’t be made by symptoms alone-many other conditions such as MS, Lymes must be ruled out first. There are no xrays or blood tests for FMS-to diagnosis-the doctor needs to assess 18 points on your body to see if they are tender-if this was not done-the doctor has no idea w\hat he is talking about.
you could have something like bursitis in your hips
go to websites such as http://www.fmaware.org
http://www.fibrohope.org
http://www.fmnetnews.org
Many websites out there give wrong info-including Ivillage and about.com adn there are abunch of sites run by founders of quack cures that are just out to make a buck–
you have to determine if teh site you are on is giving accurate info about FMS
